Hello, I’m Renee Hinchey – children’s book author

I hold Master’s Degrees in Early Childhood and Special Education, and have spent over 20 years working in elementary education before moving into academic advising and teaching at a community college. Education has always been at the heart of what I do.

My debut book, Skate, Me and the Big Gray Sea, was written to both entertain and gently educate – especially children who see the world a little differently. Inspired by my son, who is color-blind, I wanted to create a story that reassures kids they’re not alone, and that their “difference” can be seen as a strength. With positive reinforcement and inclusive storytelling, my goal is to help all children feel seen.

I live in North Carolina with my husband and our elderly dog, Huey. My daughter lives and works in New York City, and my son attends university here in North Carolina.
